Kinship

These resources introduce Woodland Cree kinship titles for extended family members. Students listen to the pronunciation of kinship titles in vocabulary videos. Then they practice writing kinship vocabulary in activities that lead to creating and presenting a three-generation family tree.

These resources share the Woodland Cree words for the wind and moon phases as told by Elders of Little Red River. Elder Julienne Nanooch shares memories about trapping in the moonlight as a child. Then, students participate in different activities to practice wind and moon vocabulary.

These resources introduce students to the · (“w” sound) at the beginning or in the middle of a word. Then students practice reading and printing the · (“w” sound) and translating words with the · (“w” sound) from Standard Roman Orthography and English to syllabics.

ᓀᒋᒋ My Brother

These resources share lessons about nehiyaw values of kindness, helpfulness, and respect. A story written by Monica Nooskey and illustrated by Chester Ribbonleg introduces students to the character ᒋᒋ (Brother). ᒋᒋ teaches students words and phrases in Woodland Cree about being helpful to others and not bullying.
